We have made it to quote number 7! Have you been paying attention? If you have missed any of the previous 6 quotes and would like to catch up, take a look here.
Today’s quote is about you, and your true identity. In comics, super heroes with amazing abilities often have simple and mundane identities as normal people. For us, we could say the opposite is true…
Enjoy!
“We are spiritual beings incarnate in material bodies, and our true identity is divine and not human.”
Dario Salas Sommer
Do you believe you are working on yourself to cover up something bad, or fix something terrible?
Or, do you think that you are a machine that simply needs to be reprogrammed so that it will function better?
Does your desire to improve yourself come from an underlying guilt about who you are?
The message in the above quote is not about what we have done, or what we can change if we work hard enough. It is about who we are, underneath it all.
So many people who work on themselves do it because they don’t like what they see. They want to experience something different, a change, and in essence, that is a wonderful reason to decide to make changes.
But if deep down, you believe that your inner work is to cover up something terrible that is at the core of your being, your subconscious mind sooner or later brings your work to a grinding halt. Why? Because you do it from a place of guilt, shame, and lacking.
The real impetus for overcoming the many challenges of self work comes from truly loving yourself, and it is not possible to love yourself if you truly believe you are “bad” at your core. And the good news is: you are not.
Dario Salas Sommer’s message is that underneath all of our bad habits, flaws, and imperfections, we are the “Divine Spark”, a living piece of the Creator, or God, or Universal Energy, or whatever you would like to call it. That spark is you. It is so much more than your name, race, body, bank account, or social standing. It is to be experienced and not just theorized about.
It is already perfect and beautiful, yet it has limited ability to express itself in your life because of the dense vehicle it has to operate through. It is like having a secret pot of gold you can not really make use of because it is situated behind a thick wall.
The poet and mystic Rumi said
If you knew yourself for even one moment,
if you could just glimpse
your most beautiful face,
maybe you wouldn’t slumber so deeply
in that house of clay.
Rumi
Increasing your spirit’s, your being’s power to act in the world, that is the goal of spiritual work. To connect you with a source of light, harmony and awareness which is in essence who you really are – that is the work in action.
Dario Salas Sommer founded the Institute for Hermetic Philosophy for just this purpose, to help people to grow their Being.
So maybe try this: In a tranquil setting, relax and breathe, and go to a quiet place inside yourself. Read Dario Salas Sommer’s quote to yourself slowly a few times. Allow your mind to freely ponder its true meaning. Then, ask yourself:
What do I feel?
