We are up to #5 already! How did that happen so quickly? We hope you have been getting good mileage out of these bits of wisdom that have been coming your way…
Don’t let them go to waste!
This next quote refers, more than anything, to expectations that occur in your mind, and how they can effect the way you act in life. If you want to be happy, really consider these thoughts. As is true for the previous ones,
Deep, meaningful, reflection on this quote could change your Life.
“If we always pay joyfully in advance for what we want, life will be like a loving mother who pours the most beautiful and important goods of life over us.”
This law refers to the one one of the 7 Hermetic laws which describe the workings of the universe, The Law of Cause and Effect, which tells us:
“Every Cause has its Effect, Every Effect has its Cause.. nothing escapes the Law”
Nature tells us we have to pay in advance for what we want. Inside of us, at the deepest level, we know these words make sense and we accept them fully:
We walk into a store with money, knowing that before we can take home what we want, we have to first make a payment of equivalent value. We know
that we have to prepare a meal before we eat it, and not the other way around. No one argues or suffers about this truth, no problem there.
But somehow, on the unconscious level, we don’t accept it. We generally look for those things that offer results without difficulty, good value for little or no payment, and solutions to our problems without work. So even though one part of us accepts the general rule, another part looks for exemptions and loopholes.
But these loopholes and exemptions are usually just fantasies, leading us by the nose off the edge of a dangerous cliff.
If you think about it long enough, you may begin to see this as the reason why we often fall for scammers, corrupt politicians, and people who don’t have the best intentions towards us. They offer us a short cut that does not really exist.
It is our unconscious mind, riddled with random half truths, that makes this trouble for us. The unconscious mind accepts any thought that has managed to get into it without questioning and examining it beforehand. One of the half truths that has quickly circulated around this planet is that if we are lucky, we can have things we value free and easy, – in other words, without equivalent payment. And interestingly, when we act on this thought, we eventually become sad, angry, depressed, and disillusioned.
The words in the quote perhaps attempt to undo this damage. When we want something, if instead of expecting to get lucky somehow, we choose to create an equivalent amount of work, good, or value in the world before expecting to enjoy that thing, we will have a different view of life. Instead of being some unpredictable game in which we are a constant victim, we become part of “management” of the Universe, making decisions about what will happen next.
The ancient Philosopher Epictetus said:
“There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.”

This brings us to the other aspect of the quote, which focuses on our internal feeling of happiness and joy – that we experience wellbeing when we are focused inward, on guiding our own energies and will, instead of hinging our mood and state on things that we can’t change. Paying happily means doing so without complaining or suffering.
Achieving this focus of this quote may be a long process, and one shouldn’t expect to master it overnight. Yet it applies to internal and external goals everywhere in life:
- Love/Harmony in Relationships
- Financial Success
- Internal Order and Peace
- Health and Physical Wellbeing
- Wisdom and Understanding
- Happiness and Fulfillment
- Fitness Goals
- Friendship
- Mastering a Skill
Imagine what life would be like if you started now to pay happily in advance for these things, and other things that you want?
Could you choose one thing you want, and think of simple ways you can pay for it in advance? (Power Hint: don’t cut corners or look for bargains)
